Did you know that Huacachina is made up of two Quechua words? Wakay means “to cry” and China is “young woman”. As the name suggests, the oasis was named after the legend of a young crying woman. It’s believed that she became a mermaid and still lives in the depths of the lagoon today.

The town is located between the capital of Lima and Machu Picchu. It’s a resort town where visiting tourists and Peruvian locals can relax and escape the blazing sun. Ica is the closest town to Huacachina and is only a 10-minute drive away.

From December to February, the temperature is hot and sunny during the day. During the rest of the year the temperature is quite mild. However, all around the year the temperature at night is definitely chilly!
